Denise J. Kiss (Appointed)

Barrister & Solicitor

The Honourable Justice Denise J. Kiss was appointed to the Alberta Court of King’s Bench in June 2020. During her time with Bruyer & Mackay she was valued for her experience and insight.

Denise was an early advocate of alternative dispute resolution processes and has assisted parties by mediating their disputes in her private practice for more than 20 years. She previously volunteered as a mediator with the Edmonton Community Mediation Services and with the Provincial Court of Alberta Civil Division. She is currently a volunteer mediator with the Alberta Justice Child Support Resolution Program.

Denise obtained a Bachelor of Arts with distinction from the University of Alberta (1987) with a special major in criminology. She graduated from the University of Alberta Faculty of Law in 1991 and completed her articles of clerkship with the Alberta Court of King’s Bench/Alberta Court of Appeal and the law firm of Milner Fenerty. Immediately after articling, Denise joined the boutique law firm of Rand Moreau and has practiced family law exclusively since.

Although Denise represents clients with all types of family law issues, she has a particular interest in assisting clients with custody and parenting disputes. Denise has been involved in numerous high-conflict custody disputes in various roles such as counsel for one of the parents, for grandparents, for the children, and as a mediator.

Denise currently sits on the Alberta Community and Social Services/Children’s Services Appeal Panel. She is a volunteer member of the Law Society of Alberta Conduct Committee and a member of the Appeal Committee for the Legal Aid Society of Alberta. Denise is also involved with the Independent Legal Advice Program for Survivors of Sexual Violence offered through the Elizabeth Fry Society of Alberta.
