Patricia M. Hebert, KC

Barrister & Solicitor / Registered Mediator

Patricia Hebert has practiced law since 1995 representing children and parents in unique, complex and high-conflict custody cases, including extensive child protection and international abduction cases.

As a mediator, collaborative lawyer, child advocate, and litigator, she works to maintain a focus on the principled representation of children’s needs, protecting them from the consequences of poorly managed conflict, and establishing the conditions for their healthy futures.

She collaborates with psychologists and other professionals, works on legal reform, and is committed to educating lawyers, judges and parents on positive ways to support children in the course of a transition.

She makes herself available to parents at any stage of a separation to help them make choices that contribute to a positive future for their children.

Patricia is a sessional instructor of law at the University of Alberta, an instructor at the National Judicial Institute, and a frequent speaker, panelist and author on children’s participation in family cases.

She is a founding member of the Alberta Chapter of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts (AFCC), and past chair and member of multiple provincial and national Canadian Bar Association committees in the areas of family law, legal aid and access to justice. She regularly serves as a court-appointed amicus, a volunteer position asked to help the court understand and support unrepresented litigants. She taught the Representation of Children Training Program in 2005.

Patricia was recognized with the Queen’s Counsel (King’s Counsel) distinction in 2016.

She is past chair of the board of directors of the Kids Kottage Foundation. She received the 2014 Women in Law Leadership award for her work in the community and the American College of Trial Lawyers Beverley McLachlin Access to Justice Award (2022) for her work promoting and expanding access to justice.
