John Benkendorf

Counsel

John is an experienced litigator who is passionate about obtaining just outcomes for his clients. He previously worked as a Crown Prosecutor litigating a wide variety of cases including several homicides, and he has also worked as a lawyer for both the R.C.M.P and the Edmonton Police Service. He received a Premiers Award of Excellence in 2007 for his work on a cold case murder file, one of only 3 prosecutors to ever receive this distinction, as well as a Queens Diamond Jubilee medal in 2012 for outstanding service to his clients and his community. He has also been a guest lecturer at the University of Alberta Law School.

John currently has a full-time practice representing police officers across Canada on employment and criminal law matters. He takes on a small number of family law clients every year where domestic violence, coercive control and parental alienation are significant issues.

John’s focus is always on mediation and attempting to resolve matters informally and expeditiously, but when required, he is also a capable and tenacious litigator who works tirelessly to obtain the best possible outcome for his clients.

John has appeared at all levels of court in Alberta, as well as the Federal Court of Canada and various administrative tribunals.

When not practicing law, John enjoys travelling, setting unobtainable fitness goals and spending time with friends and family.
