      <image:caption>Barrister &amp; Solicitor Laura Bruyer is an experienced litigator at all three court levels (Provincial, Court of King’s Bench and the Court of Appeal) in matters of conflict where litigation is the last resort. She has appeared before the Court of Appeal of Alberta more than 25 times. Laura obtained her LLB from the University of Alberta in 1991 and articled to a large Edmonton firm before moving to a smaller firm in 1992 where she became a partner in 1997. She moved from a general litigation practice to a focus on family law in 1999 and joined the partnership of Gordon Zwaenepoel (now Bruyer &amp; Mackay) in 2005. Laura was appointed Queen’s Counsel (now King’s Counsel) in 2022. She specializes in complex disputes relating to custody, access, child support, spousal support, and property division in both trial and appeal courts. In addition to her court of appeal work, she also runs at least six family law trials/hearings a year in which oral evidence is called. She has represented clients in numerous binding judicial dispute resolutions as an effective alternative to trial when appropriate. Laura is a regular contributor to the advancement of legal education and has presented papers for the Legal Education Society of Alberta, with a particular emphasis on spousal support. She has been a sessional lecturer at the University of Alberta Faculty of Law and recently became a member of the steering committee charged with revising and rewriting the Alberta Family Law Practice Manual. Alex strives to help clients move forward and meet their family’s needs in the least adversarial way possible. She approaches her work with compassion, creativity, and care. Alex was born in Timisoara, Romania, and grew up in Calgary. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Philosophy from the University of Calgary in 2022, graduating at the top of her class. Alex received several academic honours, including the Faculty of Arts Silver Medal and the award for Best Thesis in the Department of Philosophy. She obtained her Juris Doctor, with distinction, from the University of Alberta in 2025. Alex tailored her legal education to prepare for a fulfilling career in family law. In 2024, she competed in the National Family Law Negotiation Moot where her team won the award for best written materials. She took every opportunity to deepen her family law, negotiation, and advocacy skills, receiving the highest mark in her Advanced Family Law course. One of Alex’s passions is exemplified in her dedication to helping low-income individuals navigate the legal system. She worked at Student Legal Services (SLS) for three years, first as a volunteer, then as a dayleader, and finally as coordinator of the Legal Education and Reform Project. She supported survivors of family violence by leading a phone outreach program with the Today Centre. She also completed a year-long work placement in family law at the Edmonton Community Legal Centre. In all of these endeavours, Alex presented complicated legal information to the marginalized public in a manner that was trauma-informed, comprehensive, and easy to understand. Alex is an active community member. She has served on the Helping Families Handle Cancer Board of Directors for over six years and completed her second term as Board Chair in 2025.
